Souvenier Guinee - Danthor Foundation in Action

Souvenier Guinee.

There is a lakou of four Vodou families in Jacmel, who are in dire need.

The heads of each family are Manbo and Hougan and all are well known and respected throughout Jacmel.

They serve the Lwa with great joy and dignity, and help those who come to them for healing of the spirit and body with fiery rituals.

When last in Haiti I attended a danse for Baron Kriminel which they hosted and it was fantastic. There were hundreds of people present.  The Hounsi sang and danced for hours and the Lwa came down. Ayibobo!

The whole occasion was energy packed. No prejudice, no judgements, just Vodou bliss!

Some who practice their Vodou in far away places, but have traveled to Jacmel will be familiar with these Manbo and Hougan. They have contributed huge amounts of time and energy into kanzo’s in Jacmel. They receive very little payment for their work, and indeed, it is their dream to build their own peristyle in the lakou, and  continue to sevi-lwa and their immediate community.

These four families with children ranging from infants to young men and women, live in real poverty. The small huts made of corrugated iron are completely rusted out and full of holes, so there is little shelter in the rainy season. None, if in a hurricane.

When discussing their plight with Hougan Babou he said to me…
Manbo, I am a poor man, I have nothing.  At times I cannot even feed my children….Look at the holes in my house…..Is not too much to ask for a man of God to have decent food & shelter for his family

I agree .

Manbo Andreli is a very hard working mother, who serves the Lwa with Force and has great kanzo skills. Her children don’t go to school, as there is no money to send them. Manbo herself, has a thyroid problem that requires medical attention, which of course, she cannot afford.

Another Hougan serves Gran Bwa and is a very knowledgeable and wise Hougan. His strong desire to build a peristyle right there, for their ceremonies and healings, is palpable.

I feel very strongly that aiding and assisting these Manbo, Hougan and their families is good Vodou. The call from Erzili Danto is strong here for us to do good work and help out. These are wonderful Vodou people and a tragic example of just how poor rural Haitians are.

There are so many things this lakou needs, and all of us who practice Vodou in far away places, can really make this dream come true for these families….
…. a small peristyle , where they can sevi-lwa with honour and dignity that is permanent and their own…….                   Ayibobo!

2010 Earthquake.

I first wrote of this lakou in 2009 and the plight of Manbo Andreli and these vodou families,  I visited with them after the quake. Manbo Andreli’s thyroid problem has intensified and she has still had no medical treatment.

Their homes are rubble and nothing at all remains of Houngan Babou’s rusted iron hut. All they have is a single tent.

Houngan Babou’s eyes said it all as I stood with him in  what remains of their lakou, it was a heart breaking experience, they have so little and even that has been taken away.

They have received no support from the Vodou community here overseas, despite our requests for assistance nor  help from their kanzo children.

Vodou is Haitian and all of us who  sevi-lwa need to consider the plight of our Haitian brothers and sisters without them we would have no vodou.

Urgent…..Clean water and food; Medication and treatment for Manbo Andreli, then rebuild the houses and get the children to school one per family at a time.  This is urgent

PLEASE DONATE AND ASSIST THESE MANBO AND HOUNGAN

Peristyle Souvnier Guinee. A small peristyle in the jungle of the South-East Jacmel region.
A place where Manbo and Hougan can do kanzos of their own and hold dances and ceremonies. Somewhere, we were blessed to be able to be a part of building, a place each one of us would always be welcome.
